4. Remove the ball check valve and sprine by prying
the bâll rctâiner loose from the plunger with the blade of
a snâll screw driver (fig. 6A4-12).
Clêaning and !nspoction
Thoroughly clean all parrs in cleaning solvent, âncl
inspect them carefully. If any parts âre dâmaged or worn,
the entire lifter âssembly should be replaced. If the lifter
body wall is scuffed orworn, inspect the cylinder block lifter
bore. If the boitom of th€ lifter is scuffed or wom, inspect
the camshâft lobe- If ihe push rod seat is scuff€d ol worn,
inspect the push rod. An additive containing EP lube, such
as EOS, should ahvays be âdded to crânkcâse oil for run-in
when any new camshaft or lifters are instâlled. All danaged
or worn lift€rs should be replaced.
NOTICE: For prop€r lilter rotation during engine
operation, lifter foot must be convex.
Assembly
L Place the check ball on small hole in bottom of the
plunger.
2. Insert check ball spring on seat iû ball retainer and
Dlace retâiner over bâ]1 so that spring rests on the bâil
ôarefully press the retainer into position in plunger with the
btade of a small screw driver (fis. 644-13)
3. Plac€ the plunger spring over the ball retainer and
slide the lifter body over the spring ând plunger, being
carefùl to line up the oil feed hol€s in the lifter body and
plunge!.
4. Fill the assembly with SAE 10 oil, then insert the
end of a 1/8" (3mm) drift pin into the plunger and press
down solid. At this point, oil holes in the lifter bodv and
plunger assembly will be aligned (fig. 644-14/
CAUTIONi Do not attempt to forco or
pump the Plunger.
5. lnsert a 1/16" (l.6mm) drifl pin rhrough both oil

3. General Noise Throughout the Vaive Trâin-This
will, in most câses, becausedby either insumcient oil supply
or improper adjustment.
4. Intermittent Clicking-Probable câuses âr€:
a. A microscopic piece of dirt momentaily caught
between ball s€at and check valv€ ball.
b. In rare cases, the ball itself may be out-of_round or
c. Improper adjustment.
In most cases where noise exists in one or more lifters
â11 lifter units should be removed, disassembled, cleâned in
a solvent, reassembled, and reinstâlled in the €ngine. Ifdirt,
corrosion, carbon, etc. is shown to exist in onê unit, it more
likely exists in all th€ units, thus it would only be a mâtter
of rime before âll lifters caused trouble.
Removal
1. Remove intake mânifold âs previously oudined
2. Remove vâlv€ mechanism as pr€viously outlined
3. Remove vâlve lifters.
NOTICE: Plâce vâ1ve lifters in â râck so that they may
be reinstalled in the sâme location.
lnstallation
1. Install vâlve lifters.
NOTICE: whenev€r new valve lifters are being
instâlled, coât foot of valve lift€rs with "Molykot€" or
its equivâl€nt. Make sùre lifter foot is conv€x.
2. Install intâk€ manifold âs previously outlined.
3. Install and adjus! valve nechânism âs oudined
Disasssmbly
l. Hoid ihe plunger down with a push rod, and using
the blade of â small screw driver, lemove the Push rod seât
2. Remove the push rod seat and met€ring valve (fig
6A4-11).
