6F.4 ENGINE EXHAUST
E X H A U S T F R O N T P I P E
R6moval
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove exhâust pip€ to manilold nuts.
3. Support caiaiytic convener ând disconnect pipe âi
catalytrc converter.
4. Remove pip€.
lnstallation
1. Connect pipe to câtalytic converter.
2. Artach exhâust pipe to exhâust manifold using n€w
gasket.
3. Check all clearances.
4. Tighten all connections and remove support.
5. Lower vehicle and remove from hoist.
EXHAUST INTERMEDIATE PIPE (SINGLE
EXHAUST)
Removal
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Disconnect exhaust intermediate pipe at converter,
3. Remove clamp at ûumer and remove exhaust
intermediâte pipe.
lnstallation
1. Iûstal1 new exhaust interm€diâte pipe with new
clamp at mufner ând bolts and nuts at catalytic converter'
2. Check âll cleafances and tighten nuts ând clâmp

(DUAL EXHAUST)
Removal
1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Disconnect exhaust intermediat€ pipe at convertef
3. Remove clamp retaining pipe{o-mumers.
4. Disconnecl pipe.Io.muiïers and remote pipe.
Installation
L With sealer on rear of exhaust interm€diate pipe,
align tabs on pipe with slot on mumer and insert pipe into
mumer.
2. Install clâmp but do not iighten.
3. Connect pipe-to-converter-
4. Check â11 clearânces ând tighten clamps.
5. Lower vehicle.

After installation of underfloor catalytic converter
hânger, install manifold catalytic converter as follows:
1. Loosely install manifold convefter to exhaust
mânifold with manifold stud nuts. Converter mùs1 be free
to rotate on manifold.
2. Loos€ly âssembly crossover pipe (A) to manifold
converter (B) wirh attaching pârts (C) with sâddle hooked
over converter key as shown.
3. Slide underfloor converter onto crcssover pipe and
âttâch converter to hanger and tighten bolts to 30 pound
feet,
4. Instâll "U' bolt clamp on crossover pipe at
underfloor converter ând tighten nuts to 30 pound feet.
5. Tighten 'U" bolt clamp ûuts at manifold converter
to 30 pound feet.
6. Tighten mânifold stud nuts to 15 pound feet. Use a
pretorque and x torqùe s€qùence.
CATALYTIC CONVERTER (FIG. 6F.2)

1. Raise vehicle on hoist.
2. Disconnect conve er at lronl ând r€âr.
3. Remove converter.
lnstallation
Reverse removal procedure using new nuts ând bolts.

Removal
1. Râise vehicle on hoist.
2. Remove clamp at ftont ofconverter and cut pipe at

using new nùts and bolts.
4. Connect clamp at conveder to crossover or exhâust
front pipe.
5. Check all clearance ând tighten clamp and
6. Lolver tehicle ând remove from hoisL.
Catalyst Romoval
If necessary, the câtâlyst in the converter cân be
replaced on vehicl€ with Taol J-25O77.
NOTICE: Sepârate hoses should be ataached to the
aspirator ând the vibrator with maximum availâble
pressurc. Minimum of 60 psi in each hose
If vehicle has dual tailpipes, âttach the aspirator to one
pipe and place a plug in the other pipe.
1. Instâll âspirator (Fis. 6F-5).
2. Connect âir supply line to aspirator to create â
vacuum in the converte. to hold beads in place when fill
plùs is removed.
3. Remov€ converter filI plug âs foilows:
a. Threaded plug - Remove wirh 3/4" hex wrcnch or
Taol l-25017-3.
b. Pressed plug - Drive a small chisel between the
converter shell and the fill plug. Use câre not to damage
converter shell (Fig. 6F-6). Continue to deform fill plug
unril it can be removed with plien (Fig. 6F-7).
