3. Install air line adapter Tool J-23590 to spârk plug
port and apply compress€d air to hold the valves in place.
4. Using Tool J-5892 to compress the valve spring,
remove the vâlve locks, valve cap, vâive shi€ld and valve
spring ând dâmper (fig. 6Al-6).
5. Remove the valve stem oil seal.
6. To replâce, set the valve spring, valve shield ând
valve cân in plac€. Compress the spring with Tool J-5892
and install new oil seal in the lower groove of the stem,
making sure the seal is flat and not twisted.
NOTICE: A light coat of oil on the sۉl will help
prevenl fwrsung,
7. Install the vâlv€ locks ând rclease the comp.€ssor
tool, mâking sure the locks s€at properly in theuppergrcove
of the valve stem.
NOïICE: Grease may be used to hold th€ locks in
place while releasing the compressor tool.
8. Using Tool J-23994, apply vacuum to the valve
ass€mbly to make sure no air leâks past the seal.
9. lnsrall spârk plug, and torqu€ to l5 lb. ft. (20N n)
10. lnstâll and adjust valve mechanism as previoùsly
outlined.
VALVE LIFTERS
Hydraùlic vâlve lifters very seldom require attention.
The lifters âre extremely simpl€ in design. Readjustments
âre not necessary, and servicing of the lifters requires only
thal care and cleanliness be exercised in the handling of

L Remove rocker arm cover and loosen rocker arms
sufliciently to remove th€ push rods. Plâce push rods in a
rack so thât they may be returned to their original locaiion.
2. Mark distributor housing, withchalk, at numberone
and number six position (plug wirc) then disconnect plug
wircs at spark plugs ând coil and remove distributor cap and
plug wire assembly.
3. Crank engine until distributor rotor points to
number one position, then disconnect distlibutor primâry
lead at coil and remove distributor.
4. Remove Push Rod Covers.
CAUTION: DO NOT PRY PUSH ROD
COVERS. LJsing a hoat€d thin narrow
blad6 (old knife or putty knife) run around
edgss of covors 1o loosen.
5. Remove vâlve lifters.
NOTICET Plâce valve lifters in a râck so that they may
be installed in lhe same location.
Disassembly
L Hold the plunger down with â push rod, and using
the blade of a small screw d ver, remove the push rod seat
2. Remove the push rod seat and meteing valve (fig.
6A1-7).
3. Remove the plunger, ball check valve assembly and
the plunger spdng.
4. Remove the ball check valve atd spring by prying
ihe ball retainer loose from the plunger with the blade of
a small screw driver (fig. 6Al-8).
cl6âning and lnspection
Thoroughly clean all parts in cleaning solvent, âûd
inspect them carefully. If any parts ar€ dâmaged or worn,
the entire lifter assembly should be replaced. If the lifter
body wall is scuffed orworn, inspect the cylinder block lifter
bore, if the bottom of the liftar is scuff€d or wom inspect
the camshafl lobe, if the push rcd seat is scuffed or wom
inspecl the push rod.
An additive contâining EP lube, such âs EOS, should
always be added to crankcase oil for run-in whçn any new
camshaft or lifters are installed. All damaged or worn lifters
