9. with cylinder head on bench, remov€ âll spark plugs
for cleâning ând to âvoid damage during work or the head.
Installâtion
L Thoroughly clean off engine block gasketsufâceand
be certain no foreign material has fallen in the cylinder
bor€s, bolt holes, or in the valve lifter âreâ. It is good
practice to clean out bolt holes with an âir hose.
2. Install new heâd gâsket with the bead down toward
the cyiinder block. Dowels in the block will hoid the gasket
in plâce. Àlways handle gâskets carefùlly to avoid kinking
or damage to the sudace of the gâsket,
3. Cleân gâsket surfac€ ofcylinder head and carefully
set in plâce on the engine block dowel pins.
4. Use â heavy body threâd sealer on the head bolts
since the bolt holes are through into the coolant. Use ân
accùrâie torqùe wrench when installing head bolts. Uneven
tightening ofthe cyiinder head bolts can distort the cylinder
bores, câusing compression loss and exc€ssive oil
5. Instâll head bolts. Tighten the bolts a litde at a time
about three times âround in the sequence shown in Fig.
6A7-12. Give bolts â finâl torque in the same s€qu€nce.
Torque to 80 lb. ft. (108 N'rn)
6. Assemble exhaust ûanifolds to heâds. Torque bolts
to specifications.
7. wipe rocker arm shaft and bosses on cylinder head
with a cleân cloth.
8. Install push rods.
9. Tilt the rocker ârm toward the push rod and locâte
the top of each push rod in its rocker arm seat.
10. Draw down the rocker arm and shâft assembly by
tightening the shaft bolts a little at a time. Use a reliable
torque \rrench to torque theshaftbolts to specifications. Do
not overtighten.
11. Place spark plug wires in position on rocker arm
cover studs ând connect spark plug wires.
12. Install intake manifold.
13. Replace components removed in cylinder head
removal and tishten belt(s).
14. After installation is complet€d and engine hâs been
warmed up to operating temperature, recheck cylinder h€ad
bolt torque.
15. Install rocker ârm cover ând new gâsket, torque
bolts to 4 lb. fr. (5 N.m).

Removal
NOTICE: On vehicles equipped with AIR, disconnect
th€ rubber hose at the injection tubins check vâlv€. In
this manner, the tubing will not have to be removed
from the exhaust manifold.
1. Remove inrake mânifold.
2. When renoving RIGHT cylinder heâd:
a. Loosen and remove belt(s).
b. Remove wires from generatof.
c. If
€quipped with âir conditioning, remove
compressor from mounting bracket and position it out of
the wây with hoses connected, then remove generator wjth
mounting brâcket.
3. When removing LEFT cylinder head:
â. Remove oil gâg€ rod.
b. Remove power st€€ring gear pump with mounting
brâcket if preseût, ând move it out of the way with hoses
4. Disconnect wires from spârk plugs, ând remove the
spark plug wire clips from the rocker arm cover studs.
5. Remove exhâus! manifold bolts from head being
6. Wirh air hose ând cloths, clean dir! offcylind€rhead
and adjacent ârcâ to avoid getting dirt into engine. It is
extremely imporiânt to avoid getting dirt inao the hydrâulic
vâlve lifters.
7. Remove rocker arm cover ând rocker arm and shâft
assembly from cylinder head. Remove push rods.
If lifters âre to be serviced, remove them at this time.
Otherwise, protect lifters and camshaft from dirt by
coveing area with â clean cloth- Whenever lifters or push
rods are removed, place them in a wooden block with
numbered holes or similar device to keep them identified as
to position in ergine.
