THERMOSTAT
The thermostat consists of a restriction valve actrlated
by a thermostatic element. This is mounted in the housing
âi lhe cylinder heâd water outlet above the wâter pump on
L-6, ând in the forwârd part of the intake manifold, under
the wat€r oùtl€t on smâll blocks Thermosrâts âte design€d
to oD€n and close at predetermined temperatur€s and ifnot
ope;âdng properly should be removed and tested. (Refer to
Diagnosis for testing).
DRIVE BELTS (Fig, 68.7-68-'12)
Frayed or cracked belts should be replaced and
tensioned to specifications ùsing a strand lension 8age, such
as tool BT-13-95 ACB or equivalent.
Loos€ belts may place ân exttemely high impâct load
on driv€n component b€alings due to the whipping action
of the belt.
An over tightened belt plac€s unnecessâry loads on ahe
component bearings.
In figure 68"6, th€ minimum reading is the lowest
allowable setting before the belt must be reset. when
readjusting, the âdjustment specification should be met.
when adjusting a drive b€lt, it is important that the proper
adjustment specilicalion be used
NOTICE: A
'Used' b€lt is one that has been rotated

begins the 'seating' of the belt ând it should never be
reset to 'New' belt specificâtions
Heater Core
L Remove water outlet hose from heater core pipe
2. Renove inlet hose from engine connection.
3. Insert flushing gun and flush heâter core. care must
be taken when applying air pressure to preYent damage to
RADIATOÊ CAP
All passenge. car cooling sysrems are pressuriz€d \tith
â 15 p.s.i. (103 kPa) pressure câp which permits sâfe engine
operâtion ar coolant temperâtures of up to 262'F (128'C).
wheû the râdiâtor cap is remov€d or loosened, the
system pressure drops to atmospheric, and the heat which
had câused coolant lemperature to be higher lhan 212'F
(100'C), will be dissipaled by conversion of water to steam
Inâsmuch âs steam may form in the engine water passages,
it will blow coolânt out ofthe radialor upper hos€ and tank
top, necessitating coolânt replacement. Engine operating
temperatures higher than the normal boiling point ofwater
âre in no way objectionâble so long âs the coolant level is
satisfactory when the engine is cool.
Upon repeated coolant loss, the râdiator pressure cap
and seât should be checked for sealing ability Also, the
cooling system should be checked for lôose hose
connections, defective hoses, gasket leaks, etc
The râdiâtor cap should b€ washed with cl€ân water
and pressur€ checked at regular tune-up jntervâls. Inspecl
rubber seal on cap for tears or crâcks. Instâ]I radjator câp
on tester (fig. 6B-5). If the pressùre cap will not hold
pressur€ or does not r€lease at the proper pressure, replâce
