Installation of Rear E6aring Oil SEals
Braided fâbric seals are pressed into grooves formed in
cmnkcase and reâr bearing câp to reff of the oil collecting
groove, to seal against leakage ofoil around the crankshaft-
See Fig. 647-28.
A new braided fabdc seal cân be installed in crankcase
only when crânkshaft is remov€d, but it can be repaired
while crankshaft is installed, âs oullined under Rear Main
B€âring whenever the câp is removed. Remove old seal and
place new seal in groove with both ends projecting âbove
parting surface of cap. Force seal into groove by rùbbing
down with hammer handle or smooth stick until sۉl
projects above the groove not more than 1/16" (1.6mm).
Cut ends offflush with surfâce ofcap, using sharp knife or
razor blade. See Fig. 647-28.
The engine must be operated ât dorv speed when first
strted after a new braided seal is instâlled.
Neoprene composil'on seals are placed in groole< in
the sides ofbearing cap to seâl agâinst leakage in thejoints
between cap and crankcase. The n€opr€ne composition
swells in the presence ofoil and heât. The seâls âre undeisize
when newly installed and may even leak for a short time
until the seals hâve had time to swell and seâl the opening.
See Fig. 647'28.
The neoprene seals are slightly longer than the gtooves
in the bearing câp. The seâls must noi be cut to length.
Before installation ofseâls, soak for 1 to 2 minutes in light

oil or kerosene. After ;nstâllation of bearine cap in
crânkcase, install seal in bearing cap.
To help eliminâte oil leakage ât thejoint where the cap
meets th€ cmnkcase, apply silastic sealer to the rear main
b€a{ng cap split line. Wh€n applying sealer, use only a thin
coâr as an over âbundance will not allow the câp to s€ât
properly. See Fig. 6À7-29.
After seal is installed, force seals up into the câp with
a blunt instrument to be sure of â s€al aa the upper parting
line between the cap and case.
