NOTICE: Plastic gage shoùld be positioned in the
middle ofthe bearing sh€ll (Bearings âre eccentric ând
false reâdings could occur if plâced elsewhere)
b. Instâll the bearing in the conn€cting .od and cap
c. Instâll the bearing cap and evenly torque nuts to
CAUTION: Do not lurn the crankshaft
with the gaging plastic installed
d. Remove the bearing cap and using the scale on the
gaging plâstic envelope, measurc the gâging plâstic width
at the widest point (fig.642-34).
6. Ifthe cleârânce exceeds specificâtions, select a new,
corr€ct size, bearing ând r€measure the clearance.
NOTICE: Be sure to check what size bearing is being
removed in order to deiermin€ proper replacement size
beanng.
If cleârance cannot be brought to within
specifications, the crankpin will have to be groùnd
undehiTe. If the crânkpin rs âlreadv al maximum
undersize, replace crankshâft.
7. Coat the bearing surfâce with oil, instâil the rod câP
and torque nuts to specificaiions
8. when all connecting rod beâdngs havebeen instâlled
tap eâch rod lightty (parall€l to the crankpin) tô rnâke sure
they have clearance.
9. Measure all connecting rod side clearances (see
specificâtiort between connecting rod caps (fig 6A4-35)

Main bearings âre of the precision insert type and do
not utilize shims for adjustment. If cleârânces are found to
be excessive, â n€w bearing, both upper and lower halves'
will be required. Service beârin8s ar€ âvailable in stândard
size and .001 ", .O02', .OA9', 010'' and .020" undersize
Selective fitting of both rod and main bearing inserts
is necessaly in production in order to obtain close
tolerances. For this reâson you mây find one half of a
standard inseft with one half of a 001" tndersize insert

Connecting rod bearings are of the precision inseri type
and do nôt utilize shims for adjustment. DO NOT FILE
RODS OR ROD CAPS. If clearances are found to be
excessive a new beâ{ng will be required. Service bearings
âr€ avâilable in standârd siz€ ând .001" and 002" undersize
for use with new and used stândârd size crânkshafts, ând
in .010" and .020" undersize for use with recondition€d
crankshafts.
NOTICE: On removing a connecting rod cap, it js
possible to find a .009" ùnderslze beâring These âre
used in nânufâcturing for seleciive fitting.
Inspection ând Replâcemênt
L With oil pân ând oil pump removed, femove the
connecting rcd cap and beâring.
NOTICÉ: Before removal ofconnecting rod cap, mark
the side of the rod and cap with the cylinder number
to assurc matched reâssembly of rod and cap
2. Inspect the bearing for evidence of wear or damage
(Bearings showing the above shoùld not be inslall€d.)
3. wipe borh uppef ând lower beâring shells ând
crankpin clean of oil.
4. Measure the crânkpin for out-of-round or tâper with
a micromet€r. If not within specifications replâce or
recondition the crankshaft. If within specifications and a
new bearing is to be instâlled, measure the maximum
diameter of the crankpin to determine new beâring size
5. Ifwithin specificâtions measure new or used beâring
clearances with Plâstigage or its €quivalent-
NOTICE: Ifabearingis being fitted to an ouÈof-round
crankpin, be sur€ to fit to the maximum diameter of
the crânkpin. If the bearing is fitt€d to the minimum
diameter and th€ crankpin is out_of-round 001"
interference between the bearing and crankpin will
result in rapid bearing failure.
a. PlÂce a piece of gaging plastic, the l€ngth of the
