Hydraulic vâlve lifters and tubular push rods are used
to operate overhead rocker ârms ând vâives of both banks
o' cylirder\ 'ron a ,ingle câm'hâfl. I hi. system requires
no lash âdjustment at time of assembly or ln service.
Construction and operation of hydrâu1ic valve lifters ate
described below.
In addition ro its normal tunction of â câm follower,
eâch hydraulic ral!e lifrer al<o.er!e\ as ân âulomâric
adjuster which maintains zero lash jn ihe vâlve trâin under
âll operating conditions. By eliminating âll lâsh in the vâlve
trâin and â1so providing a cushion of oil to absorb shocks,
the hydraulic valve lift€r promotes quiet valve operation. It
also eliminates the ne€d for periodic valve adjustment lo
compensate for weâr of pârts,
As shown in Fig. 6À7-2 âll parts of a hydraulic lifrer
âre housed in the lifter body-
Oil isfed roall lifters through gâlleries inthecrankcase.
Oil enters eâch lifter through grooves and oil holes in the
lifter body ând plunger, nows down into the chamber below
the plunger through the feed holeând around thecheckball.
The first few cycles of operation aft€r the engine is started
forces out all âir and completely fills the plunger ând lower
châmber of each lifter with oil.
LUBRICATION SYSTEM
The engine lubrication system is ofthe force'feed type
in which oil is supplied under full pressure to crankshâft,
conn€cting rods, camshâft beêrings and valve lifters, and is
supplied under controlled volume to the rocker ârms, and
push rods. All orher moving parts are lubricated by grâvity
flow or splash. See Fig. 6A7-3.
The supply ofoil is cârried in the lower crankcase (oil
pâo) which isfilled through a filler openingin the left rocker
alm cover. A r€movâble oii gage rod on the left side of the
crankcase is provided to cbeck oil level.
Theoil pump is locâted in the timing châin cover where
it is connected by adrilled pâssage in thecylinder crânkcase
to an oil screen housing ând pipe assenbly. The screen is
submerged in the oil supply ând has ample area for âil
operating conditions. lf the screen should become clogged
for âny reâson, oil ûây be drâwn into the system lhrough
the relief vâlle in the screen.
