and vehicle performance (fig.08-o). Too low an air pressure
causes increased tire flexing and heat build-up. This
weakens the tire aûd increases the chance of damage or
failure. It cân result in tircoverloading, abnormâl tire wear,
adverse vehicle handling, ând reduced fuel mileage. To high
an âir presswe can rcsult in abnormal wear, hârsh ride, and
also increâse the chance of damage from road hâzards.
Tire inflation pressures should be checked (this
itcludes the spare tire, unless it is a stowawayspârc) ât least
monthly and when significantly changing th€ loâd in the
v€hicle. Always check tire inflation pressures wh€n tircs are
'cold.'
1. The "cold' tire inflation prcssure applies to the rire
pressure when a vehicle has not been driven more thân one
mile (1.6 kilometrg after sitting for three hours or more.
2. It is normal for lirc pressures to increase 4-8 psi
(30-60 kPâ) or more wher the tires become hot ftom
driving. Do not "bleed" or rcduce tire inllâtion pressures
afte. dliving car. Bleeding serv€s to reduce "cold" inflâtion
pressure ând increâse tire flexing which can result ir tir€
dâmage and failure.
3. For sustaingd driving at speeds of 75 mph
to 85 mph l12O km/h to 14O km/hl in countries
whete permitt€d by law, cold inflâtioû pressures must be
increased 4 psi (30 kPâ) above rhe stated cold inflarion

pressures on the Tirc Plâcald up to the maximum for each
load range stated in the chart below. Sustain€d 5pe9d6
of 75 mph to 85 mph (120 km./h to 140 km/h) are
not âdvissd when the 4 psi adjustment would require
pressures grcâter than the maximum for each load mnge
stâted on the chart. Sustainsd driving at spgsds ovêr
85 mph (140 kmlh), whero pormilted by law, is
nol advis€d unless your vehicle is equipped with special
high speed tires.
4. When towing trailers, tires shoùld be inflated to the
"Cold Tire Pressure" for "Max. Load" shown on the Tire
Piacard on the l€ft front door. The âllowable pâssenger ând
cargo load for the car, also shows on the same placard, is
reduced by an amount eqUal to the t.ailer tongue load on
the trailer hitch.
5. Always use a tirc pressure gage (a pocket type gage
is advis€d) when ch€cking inflâtion pressùrcs. Visuai
inspection of tires for inflation pressures is not enough,
especiâlly in the case of radiâl tires. Underinflâted radiâl
tires mây look similar to correcdy inflated radiâl tires. If
the inflation pressùre on a iire quite often is foùnd to be low,
6. Be sure to reinstall the tire inflation valve caps, if
so equipped, to prevent dirt and moisture from getting into
the valve core which couid cause âir leakage
7. If an âir loss occurs while driving, do not drive on
the deflated tire more than is needed to stop safely. Driving
even a short distanc€ on a deflated tire can damase a hre
and whe€l beyond repâir.
lnsDoction and Rolation
To obtain maximum tirc life, inspect and rotate tires
regularly- Bias ând bias-belted tires should be rotated at
least eâch 7,500 miles (12 000 km). Râdial tires should be
rotâted at the fiftt 7,500miles (12 000 km) ând th€n ât leâst
every 15,000 miles (2a 000 I(m), or wheneve. uneven tir€
After rotation be sure to check wheel nut tightness and
adjust the tire prcssures, front ând rear (See Tire Placârd).
