Media Drives
Attention:
The Linux operating system does not support these hot-pluggable procedures. Also, Linux
does not support hot-plugging any hot-pluggable PCI adapters or devices. The system with Linux installed
on one or more partitions must be shutdown and powered off before replacing any PCI adapter or device
assigned to a Linux partition. Please follow the non-hot-pluggable adapter or device procedures when
replacing a PCI adapter or device in any partition with Linux installed.
Attention:
Do not open the drive; no user adjustments or serviceable parts are inside.
CAUTION:
All IBM laser modules are designed so that there is never any human access to laser radiation
above a class 1 level during normal operation, user maintenance, or prescribed service conditions.
Data processing environments can contain equipment transmitting on system links with laser
modules that operate at greater than class 1 power levels. For this reason, never look into the end
of an optical fiber cable or open receptacle. Only trained service personnel should perform the
inspection or repair of optical fiber cable assemblies and receptacles.
C25, C26
This procedure is a hot-swap procedure.
Removal
Attention:
Activity on both media devices, if they exist, must be stopped prior to performing hot-plug
procedures on any device on the same SCSI bus with the media devices. Before you perform the following
procedure, ensure that the customer has taken appropriate actions to remove the media from the drive
you are removing, and that the drive can be removed from the configuration. Physically removing a
hot-plug drive from the system before it has been removed from the system configuration can cause
unrecoverable data corruption.
1. Remove the bezel from the processor subsystem by grasping the top of the bezel on either side, and
pulling it outward. Simultaneously lift the bezel off the hooks on either side of the bottom of the
processor subsystem.
2. Locate the hot-plug media device you plan to remove. If you are removing a faulty media drive, a lit
amber LED located at the front left side of each media drive will help you isolate the faulty drive.
3. Log on to the system as root user or use CE login.
4. At the command line, type diag.
5. Select Task Selection.
6. Select Hot Plug Task.
7. Select SCSI Hot Swap Manager.
8. Select the desired media drive from the list on the screen and press Enter. A message, The LED
should be in the Remove state for the selected device. You may now remove or replace the
device. Use 'Enter' to indicate that you are finished. appears on the screen.
9. Ensure that the media drive is in idle mode (the activity light remains off).
Note: Before removing the media drive make note of the drive location in the media cage (top or
bottom slot). Due to design constraints some media drives must be put into the top drive slot,
while other media drives can be put into either drive slot. If you are installing a new media
drive you must follow all instructions that came with your new media drive including the slot
location preferences.
