EXHAUST SYSTEM

OPERA TION
Th e exh a u st ga ses of t h e en gin e a r e dir ect ed
t h r ou gh t h e exh a u st m a n ifold in t o t h e t u r bin e h ou s-
in g on t o t h e t u r bin e wh eel (F ig. 2). Th e flow en er gy
of t h e exh a u st ga ses ca u se t h e t u r bin e wh eel t o
r ot a t e. Con sequ en t ly, t h e com pr essor wh eel, wh ich is
con n ect ed t h r ou gh t h e t u r bin e sh a ft wit h t h e t u r bin e
wh eel, is dr iven a t t h e sa m e speed. Th e fr esh a ir
in du ct ed by t h e com pr essor wh eel is com pr essed a n d
pa ssed t o t h e en gin e (F ig. 2).
Th e ch a r ge pr essu r e is con t r olled by va r yin g t h e
posit ion of t h e gu ide va n es (F ig. 2). Th e gu ide st u d of
t h e con t r ol lin ka ge of t h e boost pr essu r e a ct u a t or
t u r n s t h e a dju st in g r in g in t h e t u r bin e h ou sin g (F ig.
2). As a r esu lt , a ll t h e gu ide va n es wh ose gu ide st u ds
likewise m esh in t o t h e a dju st in g r in g, a r e a lso
t u r n ed (F ig. 2).
At low speeds, t h e flow cr oss-sect ion is r edu ced by
closin g t h e gu ide va n es (F ig. 2). Con sequ en t ly t h e
speed a t wh ich t h e exh a u st ga s im pa ct s on t h e t u r-
bin e wh eel is in cr ea sed, a s a r esu lt of wh ich t h e
speed of t h e t u r boch a r ger a n d t h u s t h e ch a r ge pr es-
su r e r ises.
At h igh en gin e speeds t h e gu ide va n es a r e in cr ea s-
in gly open ed a n d t h e flow cr oss-sect ion is t h u s
