CAUTION: Oil thread and head contact surfaces of
bolts that retain the crankshaft bearing caps;
tighten bolts from inside to outside, beginning at
the fit bearing. Rotate crankshaft to check clear-
ance.
(1) In st a ll cr a n ksh a ft .
CAUTION: The crankshaft bearing caps are num-
bered consecutively, beginning with the first crank-
shaft bearing cap at the front of the engine.
Attention must be paid to the way the crankshaft
bearing caps fit. If correctly installed, the lug, or
raised boss, on the crankshaft bearing cap is point-
ing to the left when viewed in the direction of travel
(intake side).

bolt s in t wo st a ges. 55N·m (40.5 lbs. ft .), t h en 90°.
(3) In st a ll t h e pist on s (Refer t o 9 - E NGINE /E N-
GINE BLOCK/P ISTON & CONNE CTING ROD -
INSTALLATION).
(4) In st a ll t h e en d cover (Refer t o 9 - E NGINE /E N-
GINE BLOCK/CRANKSH AF T OIL SE AL - RE AR -
INSTALLATION).
(5) In st a ll t h e t im in g ca se cover (Refer t o 9 -
E NGINE /VALVE TIMING/TIMING BE LT / CH AIN
COVE R(S) - INSTALLATION).
(6) In st a ll t h e en gin e (Refer t o 9 - E NGINE -
INSTALLATION).
(7) F ill t h e cr a n kca se wit h t h e cor r ect en gin e oil,
t o t h e pr oper level. Refer t o t h e own er s m a n u a l for
specifica t ion s.
(8) F ill t h e coolin g syst em wit h t h e pr oper coola n t ,
t o t h e pr oper level (Refer t o 7 - COOLING/E NGINE /
COOLANT - STANDARD P ROCE DURE ).
(9) Con n ect t h e n ega t ive ba t t er y ca ble.
WARNING: USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN THE
ENGINE IS OPERATING. DO NOT STAND IN A
DIRECT LINE WITH THE FAN. DO NOT PUT YOUR
HANDS NEAR THE PULLEYS, BELTS, OR FAN. DO
NOT WEAR LOOSE CLOTHES.

REAR
REMOVAL

(1) Discon n ect t h e n ega t ive ba t t er y ca ble.
(2) Ra ise a n d su ppor t t h e veh icle.
(3) Dr a in t h e en gin e oil.
NOTE: Loosen all of the oil pan bolts to assure that
the oil pan gasket is not damaged when removing
the rear main oil seal and end cover assembly.
NOTE: Inspect the oil pan gasket for damage. If the
oil pan gasket is damaged, remove the oil pan and
replace the oil pan gasket.
(4) Loosen t h e oil pa n bolt s.
(5) Rem ove t h e flywh eel.
CAUTION: Care must be taken when removing the
rear main seal and adaptor assembly. Failure to do
so will result in damage to the oil pan gasket.
