3.5 Loading the Medium

If air gets in between the writing panel and the medium during loading, force out the air and ensure that the medium
is securely attached to the writing panel before cutting.
When loading a medium that doesn't come with a backing sheet, spread a vinyl backing sheet or something similar
on the panel before cutting.
When loading a medium that cannot be securely attached using the normal hold-down method, reinforce adhesion
by using tape on all four sides.
Common spray glue is often used for this purpose. However, since the spray glue remover contains an anti-static
agent, do not use it directly on the writing panel of models which feature electrostatic media hold-down.
The blade length (b) should be greater than the thickness of the medium (a), but should be less than the combined
thickness of the medium and its backing sheet (c). (See Section 4.8, "Setting the Registration Mark Detection
Judgment Level".)
In the case of the FC4500-50/60 models, ensure that the medium does not cover the pen-sensing rubber strip.
(1) To facilitate the loading of a medium, move the tool carriage to the upper-right position. Press the
key to move the tool carriage to the upper-right position. When the medium has been loaded, press the
VIEW] key once again to return the tool carriage to its original position.
If your plotter is the FC4500-50 model
(2) Place the medium on the writing panel.
(3) Press the [CHART HOLD] key that is located next to the control panel.
(4) The green [CHART HOLD] key lamp lights to indicate that the medium is being held by electrostatic adhesion. If
there is any air trapped between the medium and the writing panel, force it out.
Press the [CHART HOLD] key again to release the electrostatic adhesion and extinguish the green lamp. After the
medium has been held for a while by electrostatic adhesion, it may become charged with static electricity and
therefore be harder to remove from the writing panel. There is nothing abnormal about this phenomenon.
If your plotter is the FC4500-60 or FC4510-60 model
(2) Place the medium on the writing panel.
(3) Use tape or a similar means to secure the edges of the medium. Be sure to select areas that are outside the cutting/
plotting area.
If an edge of the loaded medium comes loose, secure it with drafting tape or a similar means. The cutter blade tip or
pen tip will be damaged if it gets caught on a loose edge of the medium.
