6.2 Survey Parameters

For each option described below, there is a Reset to Defaults button, which will reset that
particular parameter to the default, or recommended, value.
6.2.1
Survey Type
Press Survey Type to display the screen in Figure 6-12 . Touch the button on the screen that
corresponds to the type of survey you want to set up. When you select a survey type, it runs a
short animation on the right, showing how the antennas move for that survey.
The explanation of each survey is below:
Reflection – This is the most common survey method. The Transmitter and Receiver
antennas are maintained at the same separation distance and are moved in tandem to
create a cross-sectional profile. Whether you are using the SmartCart, SmartTow or in
Bistatic mode, the principle of operation is the same.
CMP – Short for Common Mid-Point, this survey is performed when you want to
determine GPR velocity in an area. For best results, this survey should be performed in
an area with a flat, subsurface boundary. CMP surveys work by increasing the antenna
separation about a common middle point, thereby increasing the signal path length. The
data collected can be analyzed to determine the velocity in the soil above that reflector
(Figure 6-13).
