General Discussion:
The A230/A231/A232 product family incorporates a vertical paper transport design to minimize the distance
that the paper travels from the Drum Processing section to the Fusing Unit. This shorter paper path
maximizes paper handling efficiency and increases the product's reliability related to paper transport through
the machine. The paper handling characteristics in the A230, A231, and A232 is significantly different than
the traditional horizontal paper path configuration used on other models. As with any Fusing Unit, proper
maintenance techniques are critical to ensure optimum product reliability. Given there are many factors that
affect Fusing Unit performance, this bulletin will provide the most current information to assist the technician
when servicing or troubleshooting the Fusing area.
Clearing Paper from the "C" Area:
A Key Operator enhancement was developed to access paper in the "C" area. All A230, A231, and A232
Copiers manufactured after 8/1/99 (refer to the chart under Production Countermeasure) will utilize a Right
Door Switch to reset a paper jam condition instead of the original Front Cover Switch. A directional decal
and the wrap spring has been changed to allow the rotation of the Fusing Rollers in both directions along
with a decal to direct the Key Operator to the "C" area. Additionally, Firmware revision "T" released in
August 1999 (available @ tsc.ricohcorp.com) changed the paper timing to sense an abnormal paper
condition sooner, thus providing the Key Operators to easily view and locate the paper to be cleared.
A Right Door Switch Kit has been developed and will be offered to enhance the existing field population of
A230/A231/A232 products.
Solutions for Preventing a "C" Area Paper Jam Condition:
1. First check the paper type and weight as outlined in the Service Manual (pg. 1-1). Make sure the natural
curl of the paper is facing down for the internal paper trays and up for the LCT.
2. Check the value of the Lead Edge Erase Margin in SP Mode 101-1, this should be at least 3 mm. If
heavy solids are being copied, a larger lead edge may be necessary or the original orientation changed
to place the solid area at the trail edge.
3. Check and adjust the Nip Band by following the procedure on pg. 4-58 of the Service Manual. The
Fusing Pressure Roller Springs must be set to the Upper position.
