7 — EPON ONT overview
The product series of ONTs include the following:

Business ONTs
•
Indoor ONTs
•
MDUs
•
Outdoor ONTs
Business ONTs
The business ONTs terminates services at the subscriber's premises and are suitable
for a mix of small to medium business as well as residential applications. The
business ONTs provides voice, data and IP video, and optional RF video services to
subscribers and support CES DS1 or E1 connections at the business premises.
Indoor ONTs
The indoor ONT terminates services at the subscriber's premises and is used for
single-family residences. The indoor ONT is suitable for installation on a desktop or
for attaching to an interior wall. The indoor ONT can provide voice, data, and IP
video services.
MDUs
The multi-dwelling unit ONT terminates services at the subscriber's premises and is
suitable for apartment, condominium, and small office or home office (SOHO)
applications. MDUs supports ADLS2, ADLS2+, VDSL2 interfaces and Ethernet
interfaces which terminate at the customer premises.
Outdoor ONTs
The outdoor ONT terminates services at the subscriber's premises and is used for
single-family residences. The outdoor ONT is suitable for installation outside the
building and has a tamper-resistant design and an environmentally-hardened
enclosure.

EPON ONT functions and services

The EPON ONT products provide the following functions and services:

network demarcation for all services
•
voice inter-working function from the analog POTS lines to the VoIP/Ethernet
layers
•
CES encapsulation of DS1/E1 using the MEF-8 packetization format for
transport across the layer 2 Ethernet PON
•
mux and demux functions to the PON
•
optical-to-electrical conversion
