System Power Management Guidelines
Unless the server is operating with two 1150/500-W power supplies (three for
N+1 redundancy) at 220-V, it may be necessary to make trade-offs with
respect to which options can be added and powered with the installed power
supplies. Use the following guidelines when evaluating these trade-offs.
NOTE: The following guidelines are general. Use the Windows NT Power Supply Viewer
Utility or Novell NetWare Compaq Power Subsystem Utility and option documentation to
obtain the most accurate power capacity and assessment of power margin.
Comparing processor and hard drive power: Two processors draw as

much current as five to six hard drives.
Comparing memory and 3.3-V-powered PCI expansion board power:

Each additional 512 MB draws approximately as much current as one to
two PCI boards.
Comparing 5-V-powered PCI expansion board and hard drive power:

One PCI card draws as much current as two to five hard drives.
In general, PCI array controllers draw more current than PCI NICs.

For example, if the available capacity of the installed power supplies permits
adding two processors, you have the option of adding:
Two processors, or

One processor and three hard drives, or

Up to six hard drives

Grounding Requirements

For proper operation and safety, proper grounding of this equipment in
accordance with NFPA 70-1993 (National Electric Code), Article 250, as well
as any local and regional building codes, is required. All power distribution
devices, branch wiring, and receptacles must be listed grounding-type devices.
Due to the higher ground-leakage currents associated with the equipment,
Compaq recommends the use of a Power Distribution Unit (PDU) that
provides a supplementary ground conductor. This supplementary ground
conductor should be permanently connected to a suitable building ground
terminal. The use of common power outlet strips for this equipment is not
recommended.
