1. INTRODUCTION

1.1 This section describes the recommended procedures for installing the Inter-Tel
system and Voice Processing PC. See the SPECIFICATIONS section of the manual for hard-
ware descriptions.
This Inter-Tel Installation and Maintenance Manual instructs certified field technicians on the
proper installation practices for the Inter-Tel phone system. This manual does not provide
step-by-step instructions for premises wiring practices as dictated by the National Electrical
Code [BS 6701 in Europe], which includes, but is not limited to, cable layouts, cable installa-
tion, AC power installation, proper AC grounding, eliminating or preventing external interfer-
ences (including, but not limited to, RFI, EMI, lightning, AC power disturbances, static
discharge), and other telephony practices standard within the industry. Cable installers, elec-
tricians, and field technicians are expected to be properly trained and, if applicable, licensed
in their trade practices. Official Inter-Tel system certification is required for technical assis-
tance.

2. NEW SYSTEM INSTALLATION OUTLINE

2.1 System installation is performed in the following order. Detailed instructions and fig-
ures for each step are located throughout the INSTALLATION section.
Plan the installation, including the equipment chassis (with the ATM Switch, if applica-

ble) and main distribution frame (MDF) location, station locations, cable runs, and
optional equipment.
Run cables to the phones, single-line sets, and playback devices. Run wiring to any

optional equipment, such as the Voice Processing PC, power failure transfer equipment,
external paging equipment, general signaling devices, music source, etc.
NOTE:

Mount the MDF backboard and assemble the terminal blocks on the backboard. If any

T1 or E1 and/or Primary Rate Interface (PRI) trunks are to be installed, terminate them
on eight-conductor modular jack (line jack unit) assemblies at the MDF. If installing
any single-line sets or non-T1 DID trunks (U.S. only), you may want to attach the nec-
essary Single-Line Adapters (SLAs) and their corresponding modular jack (line jack
unit) assemblies on the backboard.
NOTE:
jack [RJ45 line jack unit] provided on the T1, E1/PRI, or T1/E1/PRI card. However, in
certain situations, it may be more convenient to use the card's DB15 connector instead.
