Information and Specifications
Figure 2-8. Traction Pump
The function/steering pump is a gear-type pump
mounted on the rear of the traction pump. It is driven
by the traction pump out put shaft and provides
hydraulic pressure and flow needed to operate
all hydraulic cylin ders. These cylinders are used
to control the grader functions and to operate the
steering cylinder.
The pump draws hydraulic oil from the reservoir. The
pressurized oil flows to the hydraulic control valve and
steering motor mounted in the steering
Drive System
The Model 695 Motor Grader drive system includes a
hydrostatic traction pump (Figure 2-7), variable speed
hydraulic motor, two-speed transfer case, rear axle
carrier assembly, and gear drive assembly.
The hydrostatic traction pump is a variable piston-
type pump. A swash plate controls the direction and
flow of hydraulic drive pressure. A forward/neutral/
reverse (FNR) lever (Figure 3-7) and linkage in the
operator's compartment and pump controller mounted
on the pump are used to control the direction of grader
movement and output pressure by tilting the swash
plate.
The variable drive motor also uses a swash plate to
control grader speed. A WORK/AUTO switch (Figure
3-2,8) located on the operator's control panel in the
operator's compartment is used to control swash plate
tilt and piston stroke. In WORK mode, the swash plate
goes to maximum displacement which generates the
maximum torque. In AUTO mode, the swash plate is
pressure compensated and will adjust to maximize
the efficiency of the motor. The swash plate varies
automatically in AUTO mode.

A two-speed transfer case mounted between the drive
motor and rear axle carrier provides high and low gear
selection.
A 2-speed hi/low lever (Figure 3-6,3) located on the
operator's control panel in the operator's compartment
allows the operator to shift gears.
NOTE: When shifting the 2-speed hi/lo switch
The rear axle carrier assembly is used to convert input
rotation to axle shaft output rotation. The left and right
axle shafts drive the gear drive assembly.
The gear drive assembly uses axle shaft rotation to drive
the gears.
Brakes
Primary grader braking is controlled by the flow of
hydraulic oil in the drive system. When the Directrional
Control (FNR) Lever (Figure 3-7) is shifted from forward
to neutral, the flow of hydraulic oil to the drive motor
console.
stops rotation of the rear axle carrier assembly, allowing
the grader to slow and stop.
NOTE: The FNR Lever and the Directional Control
Lever are the same assemblies; their names are
used interchangeably throughout this manual.
The service brake pedal (Figure 3-6,1) is a foot pedal
that when depressed, allows pressure stored in the
accumulator to reach the rear axle, activating braking.
The brakes are wet disc and are located inside the
axle. The service brake will bring the motor grader to an
immediate stop. This pedal should only be used when
braking with the directional control lever is not sufficient.
The park brake is located within the cab (Figure 3-8) In
order for the park brake to relase, the engine must be
running. The park brake is activated by spring pressure
and requires constant hydraulic pressure for release. If
the engine is not running or a hydraulic failure occurs,
the park brake can be manually
(Figure 3-7) from low to high (or high to low)
make sure the parking brake (Figure 3-8) is
engaged.
2-speed hi/low switch must be in LOW
or HIGH at all times. Grader must be on level
ground and at full stop when shifting.
released.
