6. Start the motor grader and check operation. Repair
leaks as necessary.
Replacing Wheel Steering
Cylinder
Removal
1.
Refer to Preparing Grader for Maintenance on
page 5-6 and park grader.
2. Thoroughly clean the wheel steering cylinder
(Figure 5-38), especially areas surrounding the
hydraulic hoses and fittings.

3. Tag and disconnect the hydraulic hoses.
4. Immediately plug the hoses and cylinder ports to
prevent contamination of the hydraulic system.
5. While supporting the wheel steering cylinder
(Figure 5-39), remove the slotted hex nuts and
cotter pins from the end connector.
6. Remove the wheel steering cylinder.

While supporting the wheel steering cylinder, use a
ball joint removal tool to remove the ball joints.
8. Ensure the ball joint is clean before installing/re-
greasing.
9. Inspect the end connectors for excessive wear,
loose ball joints, and damage.
NOTE: When removing the end connectors, count
the number of turns needed for removal.
The end connector or replacement can be
threaded into the new steering cylinder the
same number of turns, providing a close
match for mounting the cylinder.
10. Loosen the jam nuts and remove the end
connectors from the rod and cylinder ends. Count
the number of turns needed to remove the end
connector.
11. Inspect the hydraulic fittings. Remove fittings
for reuse on replacement cylinder or replace if
necessary.
