ENGINE MAINTENANCE

General Information

The following engine maintenance information will cover
the general engine maintenance procedures most often
required.
For additional detailed engine maintenance information,
see the current Cummins diesel engine Operation and
Maintenance Manual.
Checking the Engine Lubrication
Oil Level
NOTE: When reading the dipstick, engine
lubrication oil level must be above the
"ADD" mark, but not above the "FULL" mark.
Stop engine and allow time for engine
to cool before checking engine lubrication
oil level. Leaving engine running can cause
hot oil to splash, causing serious injury.

Refer to Preparing Grader for Maintenance on
page 5-6 and park grader.
2. Grader must be parked on a level surface to
accurately check engine oil level.
3. Open the engine panel. (Figure ##)
4. Clean the area around the engine lubrication oil
dipstick (Figure 5-10) before removing dipstick
from the engine.

5. Wait five minutes after engine shutdown.

6. Remove engine lubrication oil dipstick.

Wipe dipstick with a clean rag and reinstall.
8. Remove dipstick and ensure that oil level falls
between thte ADD and FULL markings.
9. If needed, remove the engine oil filler cap (Figure
5-11) and add oil.

10. Ensure that dipstick and oil filler cap are in place
before running grader.
Changing Engine Oil and
Replacing Filter
Engine lubrication oil must be changed according to the
interval given in the Cummins diesel engine Operation
and Maintenance Manual for this grader's engine.
NOTE: Engine lubrication oil color cannot be used
as an indicator for the need of an engine
lubrication oil change. The use of "analysis
service" is the only time not following the
required engine lubrication oil change
schedule is allowed.
Do not change engine lubrication
oil with engine running. Serious engine
damage or failure will occur.
Clean the area around engine
lubrication oil dipstick and oil filler cap
before removing the dipstick or oil filler
cap.
