BATTERY MAINTENANCE

Batteries contain sulfuric acid and
produce explosive gases that can cause
serious injury. Therefore, do not allow
flames or sparks to come near the battery.
Always wear proper protective
equipment when charging or working near
a battery. In case of acid contact with skin
or eyes, flush immediately with water for
a minimum of 15 minutes and get prompt
medical attention.
If acid is swallowed, get medical
attention immediately.
When servicing batteries, always
disconnect the negative (-) (ground) cable
first and reconnect it last. Generally, if the
negative cable is grounded during removal,
sparks will not occur. If the positive cable is
grounded during removal, sparks will occur
and could ignite explosive gases.
NOTE: The electrical system is a negative ground
system. Connect the positive (+) cables
to the positive (+) posts of both batteries.
Connect the ground (-) cables to the
negative (-) posts of both batteries.
NOTE: When replacing the batteries, dispose of the
old batteries properly in accordance with
laws and regulations.

Master Disconnect Switch

When servicing the electrical system
or welding on the grader, always turn the
master disconnect switch (Figure 5-7) to
the OFF position, disconnecting the ground
from the batteries, to prevent damage to the
grader's electrical system.
1.
Open engine access panel (Figure 3-1,1) located
on left side of grader to locate master disconnect
switch (Figure 5-5).
