Introduction to IPSec

IPSec Files

20-10
IPSec in Nautica routers operates in tunnel mode. This means that
the original IP frame is encrypted and encapsulated in a new IP
frame for transport across an unsecured network by creating a
tunnel. This is achieved by using a protocol known as
encapsulating security protocol (ESP).
ESP requires that the router forming one end of the tunnel has two
distinct IP addresses; a public address, from which tunnel data
can be sent and received, and a private address, used inside the
tunnel.
On Nautica routers the private address is usually the address of
the ETH/LAN01 path and the public address can be created by
using a numbered link to some remote router, or by using network
address translation (NAT).
For more information on NAT, refer to Chapter 15.
To take advantage of IPSec, your router must have the correct
version of software.
the routers to which they pertain. For information on how to
download files to your router, refer to Chapter 4.
