To work effectively, routers gather information about networks
connected to them and update the other routers on the network
with this information. In this way they build up a logical picture
of the network, known as a routing table, and they work out the
quickest route to other networks.
Often, when using the router, you need to set it back to its default
state. This returns all the object settings back to their default
(factory) settings. On Nautica routers, this is achieved by using
the defcon command verb (Appendix A).
Setting a router back to its default values also changes its IP
address to 10.0.0.0/8. This means that if you are using a Telnet
session to access the router, the connection to the router is lost
once the defcon command is entered.
If your PC has access to the entire network (via another router), a
telnet session can be re-established with the router as normal
(Chapter 2). If this fails, the only way to access the router once
defcon is run is to use Nautica Wizard.
