Crash Recovery

A crash has occurred when it is impossible to restore functionality to a server and it cannot be
booted. Typically, a crash has occurred because the operating system has sustained damage.

Crash Recovery of Solaris Based Servers

Restore the system from a 4 mm DAT tape or a replacement system disk. Use the Solaris ufs-
restore procedure. The tape drive can reside on any network-connected Solaris server and can be
accessed directly or remotely using the rmt facility in Solaris. You can use a bootable Solaris
installation CD to restore from tape.

Tape Access

A network-accessible SCSI tape is an optional accessory to the MPS Manager workstation. This
option also requires that the workstation has a SCSI-2 compliant external connection. You can do
limited back up and restore functions for non-MPS or dynamic data using standard Solaris utilities
such as tar.
If the tape device is installed on a Solaris based workstation, Windows file server software can back
up and restore non-system data. This method makes the server appear as a standard Windows file
sever to the other Windows servers. File sharing, storage and retrieval, and so on can be
accomplished without installing additional client software on the Windows- based stations.

System Backup and Recovery

The MPS 500 system is fully network-enabled. Management of data other than that provided in the
initial Avaya installed system is the responsibility of the customer.
The operating systems employed in the MPS 500 (Solaris and Windows) can be used with most
third-party vendors' network backup software, but Avaya recommends you inform Avaya Technical
Support before installation.
Avaya does not assume any responsibility for data loss other than the restoration of the original
system software. The installation of third-party software to provide network backup, while not a
violation of warranty, is done at the customer's risk. Any customer-installed software that introduces
a malfunction or degradation in performance that requires service is not normally covered under the
service agreement.
