Configuring Multicast Support
Occasionally, the company prepares video presentations, which a server
multicasts to employees at the central Berlin office and branch offices. Video
conferences between employees at the different offices also rely on multicast
servers. The ProCurve Secure Routers at each site must run a multicast routing
protocol to support these applications. They will use Protocol Independent
Multicast-Sparse Mode (PIM-SM).
For more information on configuring PIM-SM, see Chapter 11: Configuring
Multicast Support with PIM-SM.
In order to run PIM-SM successfully, routers must also implement a unicast
routing method. The router must have a route:
to every potential RP
to every potential source
See "Configuring IP Routing" on page A-20 for the unicast routing configura-
tion that applies to this example network.
Berlin
Network administrators select the Berlin router as the only rendezvous point
(RP) for multicast trees: this router is centrally located, and the Berlin office
contains the multicast servers.
Other routers must be able to reach the address specified for the RP. Admin-
istrators decide to identify the Berlin router by the IP address on its loopback
interface because this interface is always up.
In this example, the Berlin and Mannheim routers have a PPPoE connection
through an external network. They will have to tunnel multicasts to each other
just as they tunnel routing updates.
