Printhead-to-drum spacing adjustment

9-16
Phaser 380 Color Printer
Tool required
Printhead-to-drum gap tool
Torque screwdriver
T-20 TORX tip
This procedure assures that the printhead is the proper distance from the drum.
Make this adjustment after removing or replacing the printhead. This critical
adjustment must be made while the drum and printhead are at their normal
operating temperatures.
1.
Turn off the printer. Remove the top panel as described in the topic
"Cabinet panels and covers" on page 8-4.
2.
Once the printer reaches its normal operating temperature, enter the
hidden Service Menu as described in "Front panel menu" on page 9-2.
Scroll to the menu item Head-to-Drum Adjustment. (Alternately, this
adjustment can be made using the PC diagnostics "Drum Gap
Adjustment (Hot)" routine.)
3.
If not already tightened, tighten the printhead mounting screws to
20 in. lbs.
4.
If not already loose, loosen the printhead's four adjustment locking
screws (two at each end of the printhead until they are just snug in
place.
5.
Using the front panel menu, move the printhead to its right-most
position. At the right end of the printhead, slide the printhead gap
tool, between the printhead and the drum. Align the outside edge of
the tool with the inside surface of the printer side-frame. The flat side
of the gap tool, marked HEAD, faces the printhead.
Hold the gap tool so its 2 HOT 3 mark (which represents a 0.024 inch
gap between the printhead and the drum) is level with the top of the
cap/wipe/purge rail and the scribed mark next to the rail as viewed
from just over the top-edge of the rear of the printer frame. With a
small, flatblade screwdriver, minutely move the printhead to hold the
gap tool loosely. You should not feel any tension or gripping between
the printhead and the drum between marks 1 and 2 (which equals a
0.022 inch gap).
6.
Using the front panel menu, move the printhead to its left-most
position. Repeat the gap adjustment in Step 5 for the left end of the
printhead.
