X-axis rails-to-drum parallelism adjustment

9-14
Phaser 380 Color Printer
This procedure assures that the x-axis rails, which carry the printhead, are
parallel to the drum. Make this adjustment after removing or replacing the
X-axis drive assembly.
1.
Turn off the printer. Remove the top panel as described in the topic
"Cabinet panels and covers" on page 8-4. Remove the metal dust
cover as described in the topic "Ink loader support/cross member" on
page 8-11.
2.
Remove the ink loader as described in the topic "Ink loader" on
page 8-9.
3.
Remove the printhead as described in the topic "Printhead" on
page 8-36.
4.
Remove the printhead restraint system as described in the topic
"Printhead transit restraint assembly" on page 8-41.
5.
Remove the cover plate of the X-axis drive.
6.
Return the head roll adjuster to its factory setting. Loosen the lock
screw (accessed through a plugged hole in the right side of the printer
chassis) and align the mark on the adjust nut to the mark on the x-axis
drive frame. Retighten the lock screw.
7.
Coarse Adjustment. To align the X-axis rails to the drum, loosen the 4
large bolts (or nuts) securing the X-axis drive assembly to the chassis
enough to allow the drive assembly to slide. (For the adjustment, the
assembly will pivot on the smaller fifth screw secured in the left side
of the X-axis drive assembly and left chassis frame.)
8.
Attach and lock the X-axis rails alignment tool to the left extreme end
of the X-axis rails (position 1). The plunger of the alignment tool
should contact the drum surface. Rotate the faceplate the alignment
tool's gauge to "zero" out this measurement.
9.
Remove and attach the X-axis rails alignment tool to the right extreme
end of the X-axis rails (position 2). Again, the plunger of the
alignment tool should contact the drum surface. Note the value of the
alignment tool's gauge. With a small, flatblade screwdriver, reach
through the small access hole in the right side of the printer frame and
move the right end of the X-axis drive forward or backward until the
right and left measured values are equal.
10. Repeat Steps 8 and 9 until the values measured are equal.
11. Tighten the four mounting bolts (or nuts). After tightening, check the
difference between the left and right readings, it should be less than
+/- 0.015 inches before continuing with the Fine Adjustment.
