Installation of Crankshaft
1.
If removed, reinstall the keys and timing gear on he
crankshaft.
2.
Reinstall new bearing inserts (1, Figure 216) and thrust
bearing (2, Figure 216) in the cylinder block and main
bearing caps. Apply a liberal coat of clean engine oil to
the bearings and crankshaft journals.
3.
Place the crankshaft into the engine.
The main bearing caps are numbered and have arrows for
proper positioning. The No. 1 cap is at the flywheel end.
The arrows point toward the flywheel end of the engine.
4.
Reinstall the main bearing caps (3, Figure 216)
5.
Apply a light coat of clean engine oil to the bearing cap
bolts and tighten the bolts to the specified torque in two
stages (1/2 then full torque). See "Special Torque Chart"
on page -101 for specifications.
6.
Rotate the crankshaft to assure it turns freely.
7.
Apply threeBond Liquid Gasket to the mounting flange of
the seal housing (2, Figure 217)
8.
Align the seal housing with the two dowel pins.
9.
Reinstall seal housing and seal assembly.
10. Reinstall the flywheel (1, Figure 217) and tighten the bolts
to the specified torque. See "Special Torque Chart" on
page -101 for specifications.
Installation of Pistons
Do not allow the connecting rod to contact the crankshaft
journal during piston installation. Damage to the crankshaft
bearing journal may result.

Lubricate the piston, piston rings, and cylinder with clean
engine oil or assembly lubricant.
