The term waypoint refers to a specific location that's entered
into the database, and defined by its coordinates of latitude
and longitude, or loran TDs, or distance and bearing. A
waypoint appears on the CHART screen with a corresponding
symbol of your choice, and is often used as either an
intermediate or final destination.
By comparison, the term nav aid is used to refer to specific
points printed on a chart (primarily buoys, lighthouses, and
daymarkers), which are used as an aid to navigation on coastal
and inland waterways. For more about nav aids, see "Highlight
Two: More navigation terms" starting on page 3-2. Unlike
waypoints, you can't create nav aids; they originate on the
chart CDs, which are installed and stored on the hard disk as
part of the electronic chart. Although you can't create nav
aids, you can navigate to them. Many of the waypoint
functions can also be performed for nav aids.
Here are some of the functions you can perform with
waypoints:
• quickly navigate to any waypoint
• connect individual waypoints to form routes, then follow
these routes in one direction or another
• store up to 2,000 waypoints in the database
• edit or erase waypoints and routes
The echo sounder lets you mark fish as waypoints, at the
location where you see fish echoes on the ECHO SOUNDER
screen. You can also automatically save fish and temperature
waypoints on the ECHO SOUNDER screen. These waypoints
will be displayed on the CHART screen and WAYPOINTS
