Position the two vehicles so that they are NOT touching and apply the park brakes.
Automatic transmissions are to be placed in PARK and manual transmissions placed
in NEUTRAL. Turn off the ignition and all lights and accessories in both vehicles
(except for the hazard warning flashers and any lights needed for the work area).
Connect the leads in the order shown in
the picture
1. Attach one end of the first jumper cable
to the positive terminal of the charged
battery (identified by '+' or 'P' on the
battery case, post or clamp).
2. Connect the other end of the same
cable to the positive terminal of the flat
battery.
3. Attach one end of the second jumper
cable to the negative terminal of the
charged battery (identified by '–' or 'N'
on the battery case, post or clamp).
4. Connect the other end to a solid stationary, metallic point on the engine that has the
flat battery.
DO NOT CONNECT DIRECTLY TO THE NEGATIVE POST OF THE BATTERY.
The connection should be as far away from the flat battery as possible.
Note:
•
When making all connections take care that the clamps from one cable do not
inadvertently touch the clamps on the other cable. Also, ensure that the jumper
cables are not on or near pulleys, fans or other points that will move when the engine
is started.

Start the engine in the vehicle with the charged battery and run the engine at a
moderate speed. Then start the engine in the vehicle with the flat battery. Attempts
to start the engine with the flat battery should be made at intervals of one minute and
should last no longer than 15 seconds.
•
After starting, allow both engines to idle for approximately 3 minutes with the leads
still connected.
•
Leave the engine running as you remove the jumper cables by reversing the above
sequence exactly. While removing each clamp, take care that it does not touch any
other metal while the other end remains attached.
