EMERGENCIES
WARNING:
DO NOT attempt to 'push start' this vehicle, as it is fitted with a catalytic
converter and if uncombusted fuel were to reach the catalytic converter
and ignite, the converter could overheat or be destroyed by backfire.
If your vehicle will not start due to a flat battery, it can often be started by using energy
from a battery in another vehicle – a procedure called 'jump starting'.
Please read the following procedure in full before attempting to jump start your vehicle.
However, if after reading the following procedure you are still unsure about jump
starting we strongly recommend for your safety and that of your vehicle that you leave
the starting to a competent mechanic. If the battery repeatedly discharges, consult
your Holden Retailer.
Jump starting
WARNING:
Batteries produce explosive gases, contain corrosive acids and supply
levels of electrical current high enough to cause burns. Therefore, to
lessen the chance of personal injury when working near a battery:
Do not expose the battery to open flames or sparks. Battery action
generates hydrogen gas which is flammable and explosive.
Do not smoke near a battery.
Wear eye protection such as industrial safety glasses.
Do not allow battery acid to contact eyes or skin. Flush any contacted
area with water immediately. In case of eye contact you should get
medical help. Battery acid also damages paint and fabrics. To minimise
damage, wash off immediately.
Be sure any batteries that have filler caps are properly filled with fluid.
Remove rings, metal watch bands and other metal jewellery before
working around the battery.
Carefully follow each step in the jump starting process.
Never use a quick charger to start your engine.
Do not lean over the battery during jump starting.
The battery of your vehicle has a negative earth and a 12 volt rating. The
battery in the other vehicle must be the same voltage and also have a
negative earth. The battery capacity of the charged battery must not be
substantially lower than that of the discharged battery. So, check the
specifications in the other vehicle's owner manual to see if it complies.
Serious injury or damage may result if the wrong type of battery is used.
