Tyre air pressure
Checking the air pressure of your tyres
(including the spare) ensures your safety,
as well as reducing fuel consumption and
increasing the life of your tyres.
To ensure your vehicle maintains optimum
handling, check the pressures weekly.
For constant long distance or rough road
travelling, daily checking is recommended.
For the correct pressure for your tyres,
refer to the tyre placard on the inside of the
fuel filler flap.
Always use a tyre pressure gauge to check
the tyres. Simply looking at the tyres is not
sufficient.
Tyre inflation pressure increases when the tyres have been driven for more than 2 km.
The pressure should be checked when the tyres are cold (stationary for more than
3 hours). If they must be checked immediately after driving, increase the pressure
shown on the placard by 10%.
If the vehicle is heavily loaded, the recommended pressure for the tyres is increased.
Refer to the tyre placard on your vehicle. As the tyres are operating under greater load,
the weekly air pressure becomes even more important.
The inflation pressure should be increased according to the load on the vehicle.
Therefore, if the vehicle is loaded to half the maximum payload (refer to Chapter 10),
then the tyres should be inflated half way between the minimum and maximum
pressures shown on the tyre placard. Vehicles driven for prolonged periods over
rough roads, particularly in outback conditions, should use the cold tyre inflation
pressure for maximum load condition.
If the pressure is too low, this can result in considerable tyre warm-up and internal
damage leading to tread separation and even to tyre blowout at high speeds. If the
pressure is too high, this can result in reduced traction, increased risk of tyre blowout
and poor tyre wear.
Remember to install any valve dust caps or extensions, if so equipped. This stops
dirt and moisture from fouling the valves.
When checking the tyre air pressure, take a look at the condition of the tyre tread and
inspect for stones or abnormal wear.
Alignment and balance
Improper wheel alignment can cause the tyres to wear faster and unevenly. It can also
cause the vehicle to 'pull' to the left or right.
Out-of-balance wheels and tyres can cause annoying vibration and uneven tyre wear
such as cupping and flat spots.
If you have any reason to suspect that either of the above problems exist then have
a wheel alignment and balance check done by your Holden Retailer.
