Towing precautions
•
When towing, your tyres should be inflated to the maximum recommended
pressure shown on the tyre placard.
•
Loads should be secured so that they cannot slip and should be placed in the centre
of the trailer / caravan if possible, i.e. above the axle.
•
Trailer brakes are recommended on trailers / caravans weighing over 500 kg when
loaded.
•
The brakes on the trailer / caravan must be designed to cope with the braking
requirements of that trailer / caravan under all towing conditions, without adversely
affecting the brakes on the vehicle.
•
Make sure that you have enough room when cornering and avoid sudden
manoeuvres.
•
In the case of trailer / caravans with low directional stability, it is advisable to use
a stabiliser to dampen any rolling motion.
•
The cooling fan is driven electrically and so is not dependant on engine speed. At
high engine speeds a lot of heat is produced and at low engine speeds
correspondingly less heat is produced. For this reason, when driving uphill, do not
shift down into a lower gear (which will increase engine speed) whenever the
vehicle can still climb the hill in the higher gear.
•
Whenever a towbar is removed, be certain to have any mounting holes in the under-
body properly sealed to prevent the possible entry of exhaust fumes, dust and water.
•
Ensure that the tow bar does not obscure the rear licence plate. If necessary, remove
the towbar tongue when it is not required for towing.
WARNING:
Gas cylinders can leak, creating a risk of fire or explosion. As a precaution,
ensure adequate ventilation when carrying gas cylinders. They must be
restrained from rolling around, and where possible, placed in the load area
of the vehicle. It is recommended that if gas cylinders are frequently
transported that a purpose built carrying compartment be used.
Transportation of gas cylinders is regulated by legislation in some states.
