Checks and Adjustments
Throttle and Clutch Control Cable
Adjustment
See Figures 3-1 through 3-4.
1. Park the mower safely. (See "Park Mower Safely" on
page 1-6.)
2. Raise and support mower so traction drum is able to
freely rotate when clutch is disengaged.
NOTE
If adjusting after installing a new cable, proceed to step 7.
3. Remove throttle cover. (See "Throttle Cover" on
page 3-5.)

4. Remove air cleaner cover and air cleaner. (Refer to
engine manual.)

5. Loosen throttle lever pivot nut (1) until throttle lever
(3) returns to idle by itself.
6. Loosen cable clamp screw (5) and cable guide set
screw (6).
Never operate the engine without proper
ventilation; exhaust fumes can be fatal if inhaled.
7. Start engine. (Refer to Operator's Manual.)
NOTE
When tightening the cable clamp, make sure the clamp is
making contact with the cable sheath.

WARNING
8. Pull bail cable (4) until throttle lever (3) moves and
engine speed starts to increase. Tighten cable clamp
screw (5). Engine speed should be between 1500
and 1800 rpm. Verify that clutch is not engaged.
9. Set engine maximum speed by pulling throttle
against stop. Adjust throttle stop screw (2) until
engine speed is between 3200 and 3400 rpm.
10. Stop engine.

11. Move throttle paddle (7) to lowest setting. The low
paddle stop should be set so the throttle cable (10)
does not flex when at the lowest setting. Adjust low
paddle stop screw (9) as needed.
To adjust the stop screw:
a. Loosen jam nut (8).
b. Turn stop screw (9) clockwise to raise screw,
counterclockwise to lower screw.
c. Tighten jam nut (8).
