Overview.
The Measurement Range
The measurement ranges over which the 831C meets the standards depend upon the
selected frequency weighting. Measurements which include levels outside this range
should not be considered accurate. An overload indication appears when levels are above
the range. However, it isn't recommended to rely on measurements where the levels are
below the lower limit of the specified range.
Overload
As part of the calibration procedure, the overload level (dB Peak) for A, C, and Z weighting is
determined for the current instrument setup and microphone/preamplifier. When the
sound pressure level is higher than the calibrated overload level, the input overload icon
flashes while the condition exists.
Under Range
When the sound pressure level is lower than the meter's noise floor (the noise level of the
instrument and the preamplifier), the Under Range icon flashes while the condition exists.
The measurement can be temporarily paused at any time, any number of times. During a
pause, the run clock does not stop and instantaneous data continues on the Live tab.
After a pause, press the Run/Pause button
data is not impacted by any acoustic events occurring during the pause.
Using the Back-Erase Feature While Paused
The 831C has a back-erase feature that allows for a quick erase of the last 10 seconds (or 5
seconds) of measured data. This feature is used to erase sounds that are recorded, but not
wanted in the overall measurement. The back erase is shown as an event in the Session Log
and in the Time History record as shown in the following segments.
Back erase is not available when any of the following have been enabled in the active
Setup:
