shaft and the centreline of the input
shaft.

A transmission
service

tion plate
(Fig.
5, page 6-9 ) is
located on the left side of the ex-
tension housing at the rear. The first
line on the tag will show the trans-
mission model and
service
identifica-
tion code when required.
This transmission is of the fully
synchronized type, with all gears
except the reverse gear and sleeve
being in constant mesh. All forward-
speed changes are accomplished with
synchronizer sleeves (Fig. 36) in-
stead of sliding gears. The synchro-
nizers enable quicker-shifts, elimin-
ates gear clash and permit easy
engagement of low gear at low
vehicle speeds.
The forward-speed gears are heli-
cal-cut and are in constant mesh
(Fig. 36). Gears used in the reverse
gear train are spur-cut and are not
synchronized.
Ball bearings support the input
shaft and gear and the centre of the
output shaft (Fig. 36). Roller bear-

ings in the input shaft bore support
the front of the output shaft. The
countershaft gear (cluster gear) runs
on three rows of roller bearings. A
bronze bushing is used in the reverse
idler gear on 6 cylinder and roller
bearings for 8 cylinder.
A bushing located at the rear of
the extension housing supports the
rear of the output shaft.

are the conventional tapered ring and
straight clutch gear type
(Fig.
17,
page 6-l3and Fig. 39,page6:2l).
The shift forks, detent mechanism,
and related parts are provided in the
transmission case (Fig. 37).
OPERATION
When the first-speed gear is selec-
ted, the shift lever moves the reverse
gear and sleeve forward and forces
the synchronizer blocking ring coni-
