DIAGNOSIS
AND TESTING
The following problems can be
experienced with a manual shift
transmission: excessive amount of
noise, hard shifting efforts, trans-
mission jumps out of gear, gears
clash when transmission is shifted
from one gear ratio to another, and
lubricant leakage.
The car should be road tested, if
possible, to determine or confirm
complaint. Under normal operating
conditions, a large percentage of
transmission complaints are due to
maladjusted or faulty components
outside of
the transrruss10n, such
as,
clutch, clutch linkage, steering
columns and shift linkage. Before
and during the road test, make sure
that the clutch is functioning pro-
perly, the shift linkage is properly
adjusted, the steering column is
properly aligned and, that the trans-
mission is filled to the proper level
with lubricant.
The following diagnosis proce-
dure is compiled as a guide in cor-
recting problems related to manual
transmissions. Trouble symptoms,

ents in the clutch and/or clutch
linkage, refer to Clutch Diagnosis
POSSIBLE CAUSES
SHIFT LINKAGE
1. Improper crossover.
2. Loose nuts at steering column
levers and shift rods. If the nuts are
loose, check for bell-mouthing of
slots.
3. Bent
transmission shift rods or
linkage interference.
4.
Lack of lubrication of shift
linkage, trunnions
.

and
corrective
measures are listed in the order
they should be checked to eliminate
all possibility of maladjustment or
faulty components outside of the
transmission prior to any transmis-
sion removal and
disassembly.
If
the transmission was removed, re-
paired and reinstalled, make certain
the clutch and all gear shift linkage
is adjusted to specifications. Road
test the vehicle to be sure that
the problem has been completely
corrected.

CORRECTION
1-2. Adjust levers and shift rods
to proper crossover, torque nuts to
specification. Replace bell-mouthed
rods or levers.
3. Replace bent rods.
4. Clean and lubricate with Mol-
ybdenum Disulphide grease.
