Starting Problems (continued)
Problem
The engine cranks, but does not start.
The engine cranks (but should not)
when the engine control inputs (neutral
switch, parking brake, PTO switch and
seat switch) are out of position.
The engine starts, but stops when the
key switch is released from the S
position.

Possible Cause
The fuel tank is empty.
The engine and/or fuel can be too cold.
The fuel filter is plugged.
The fuel pump or circuit wiring is
damaged.
The fuel solenoid pull coil relay is
damaged (model 31900, 31901, 31907
and 31909).
The engine fuel solenoid is damaged
(model 31900, 31901, 31907 and
31909).
The glow plug switch is damaged
(models 31900, 31901, 31907 and
31909).
The glow plug relay is damaged.
The glow plugs are damaged.
The engine or fuel system is
malfunctioning.
Engine ECU is damaged (models
31902 and 31903).
The switch is out of adjustment or
damaged.
The TDM display/controller is damaged.
The key switch or circuit wiring is
damaged.

Corrective Action
Fill the fuel tank.
Move the machine to a heated
environment and allow the engine and
fuel to warm.
Check the fuel filter and replace if
necessary.
Test the fuel pump and replace if
necessary.
Test the relay and replace if necessary.
Test the fuel solenoid and replace if
necessary; refer to the Yanmar Service
Manual and Troubleshooting Manual
for the engine.
Test the glow plug switch and replace if
necessary.
Test the relay and replace if necessary.
Test the glow plugs and replace if
necessary; refer to the Yanmar Service
Manual and Troubleshooting Manual
for the engine.
Test the engine fuel system; refer
to the Yanmar Service Manual and
Troubleshooting Manual for the engine.
Check the engine ECU and wire
harness connector for corrosion or
damaged pins.
Reprogram or replace the Engine ECU;
contact an Authorized Toro Distributor
for assistance.
Adjust the switch position when
possible (neutral switch only).
Test the switch and replace if necessary.
Check the TDM display/controller
Diagnostics>Engine>Inputs.
Check the TDM display/controller and
wire harness connector for corrosion
or damaged pins.
Reprogram or replace the TDM
display/controller; contact an
Authorized Toro Distributor for
assistance.
Test the key switch and replace if
necessary.
