Initial Configuration Guide

3.2 Creating a RAID Group

RAID levels supported by the S5600 and steps to create RAID groups of the supported levels
on the OSM3.0.
Prerequisite
When creating the RAID group, note the following items:

3.2.1 RAID Levels Supported by the System
The S5600 storage system support five RAID levels: RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6 and
RAID 10. You can select a RAID level according to the results of comparison between the five
levels.
3.2.2 Creating a RAID 0 Group
RAID 0 is suitable for unimportant services that requires high read/write ability, such as
streaming media. RAID 0 can be created conveniently on the OSM3.0.
3.2.3 Creating a RAID 5 Group
RAID 5 is suitable for services that has certain requirements on performance and reliability,
such as web and E-mail servers. RAID 5 can be created conveniently on the OSM3.0.
3.2.4 Creating a RAID 6 Group
RAID 6 is applied to the scene that has high requirements for reliability and performance, such
as the database and the server. You can create RAID 6 conveniently through the OSM3.0.
3.2.5 Creating a RAID 10 Group
RAID 10 is suitable for services that requires high performance and reliability, such as database
servers. RAID 10 can be created conveniently on the OSM3.0.

NOTE
The steps enclosed by dashed lines should be performed after you log in to the AS. The other steps are
l
performed on the OSM3.0.
Steps 1 and 2 are optional. By default, CHAP authentication is disabled. In this case, you can skip steps
l
1 and 2. To improve the security of ASs accessing the S5600 , you are recommended to enable CHAP
authentication.
The hard disks in slot 0-3 are system coffer disks for saving valuable system data. Do not
insert or remove a hard disk randomly, or displace the sequence of the hard disks in the
coffer. Otherwise, system data might be damaged.
Do not insert or remove hard disks in other slots randomly. Otherwise, system data might
be lost.
The types and capacities of coffer disks must be the same.
A hard disk must be present in controller subrack slot 0-1 and slot 2-3 respectively.
To ensure reliability of the storage system, hot-spare disks must be created. When creating
hot-spare disks, you cannot use coffer disks as hot-spare disks. For details about creating
hot-spare disks, see the OceanStor S5000 Series Storage System OSM3.0 Help.
NOTE
Generally, the figures of OSM3.0 in this chapter show the S5600 controller subrack (FC and iSCSI host
ports).
