Layer
Because the external CSU/DSU manages timing, framing, and signaling for the
E1- or T1-carrier line, the serial interface does not have to perform these
functions. Consequently, you do not need to configure options to control these
functions. As a result, the serial interface requires only minimal configuration.

Making the Physical Connection

To connect the serial module to the CSU/DSU, you will need one of the
following cables. (See Figure 5-3.)
V.35 cable
X.21 cable
EIA 530 cable
Serial V.35, X.21,
or EIA 530 cable
