Appendix B: Glossary
T-interface Connects the NT1 to the NT2 in an ISDN network. The T-interface is a four-
T1-carrier line A carrier-line that carries speech or data at the DS-1 rate. T1 lines operate with
T3 A digital carrier signal designed to transmit speech or data at the DS-3 rate.

wire/two twisted pair connection. Outside North America, the T-interface is
the first interface at the subscriber's premises.
24 DS0 channels of 64 Kbps each for a total of 1.544 Mbps bandwidth.

server. The TACACS+ server contains a database of information on network
hosts and users. It provides a client authentication at the client's request.
TACACS+ can also provide a client authorization to access certain network
applications, and TACACS+ can log, or account, for clients' activity. TACACS+
allows independent handling of the aspects of AAA. For more information on
the original TACACS protocol, see RFC 1492 (at http://www.ietf.org/rfc/
rfc1492.txt). See also AAA.
of the IP protocol suite. TCP allows applications on networked hosts to create
connections to one another over which they can exchange data. TCP guaran-
tees reliable and in-order data delivery. TCP also distinguishes data for multi-
ple, concurrent applications (e.g. a web server and an email server) running
on the same host. TCP protocols include, among many others, HTTP, email,
and SSH. For more information on TCP, see RFC 793 (at http://www.ietf.org/
rfc/rfc0793.txt).
signals to share the same physical line. TDM interleaves pulses representing
bits from different channels into a bit stream. Each DS0/E0 channel receives
an equal slice of time in a rotating, repeated sequence. The receiving device
can derive the two or more channels from the bit stream.
the terminal endpoint on the subscriber's ISDN line. TEIs can be statically or
automatically assigned.
