CUTTING UNIT
Step Cutting
NOTE: One cutting unit width shown. Arrow indicates
direction of travel.
Probable Cause
HOC (height-of-cut) settings are different from one side of the
reel to the other.
Worn roller bearings.
Worn reel bearings.
Reel-to-bedknife contact is different from one side of the cutting
unit to the other.
Cutting unit movement is restricted.
Variations in turf density.

Step cutting occurs when grass is cut taller on one side of
the reel than the other. This is usually caused by
mechanical wear or an incorrect roller adjustment.

Check HOC adjustment. (See "Height-of-Cut Adjustment (HOC)" on
page 8-17.)
Check/replace roller bearings. (See "Cutting Unit Front Roller" on
page 10-8.)
Check/replace/adjust reel bearings. (See "Reel Bearing Pre-Load
Adjustment" on page 8-18.)
Check reel to bedknife contact. (See "Bedknife-to-Reel Adjustment"
on page 8-14.)
Check/remove cutting unit movement restriction.
Change mowing direction.
Remedy
