INTO AXLE HOUSING
WARNING: Be careful when using cleaning
solvents. Follow the solvent manufacturer's
instructions for safe use to prevent injury.
1. Clean the inside of axle housing and the mounting sur-
face where the carrier fastens. Use a cleaning solvent and rags
to remove dirt Blow dry the cleaned areas with air. Also see the
procedure on cleaning axle assembly earlier in this section.
2. Inspect the axle housing for damage. Repair or replace
the axle housing. See the procedure earlier in this section.
3. Check for loose studs in the mounting surface of the
housing where the carrier fastens. Remove and clean the studs
that are loose.
4. Apply liquid adhesive to the threaded holes and install the
studs into axle housing. See the procedure outlined .earlier.
Tighten studs to current torque value. See the torque chart later
in this section.
5. Apply silicone gasket material to the mounting surface of
the housing where the carrier fastens. See the procedure ear-
lier in this section.
6. Install the carrier into the axle housing. Use a hydraulic
roller jack or a lifting tool.

·
9. Repeat step 8 until the four fasteners are tightened to the
correct torque value. See the torque chart later in this section.
10. Install the other fasteners and washers that hold the
carrier in the axle housing. Tighten fasteners to the correct
torque value. Sea the torque chart later in this section.
11. Connect the driveline universal joint to the pinion input
yoke or flange on the carrier.
12. Install the gaskets and axle shafts into the axle housing
and carrier. The gasket and flange of the axle shafts must fit flat
against the wheel hub (Figure 2-102).
13. Install the capscrews and washers that hold the axle
shaft to the wheel hub. Tighten capscrews to the correcttorque
value. See the torque chart later in this section.
14. If the wheel hubs have studs, install the tapered dowels
at each stud and into the flange of the axle shaft. Use a punch or
drift and hammer if needed.
