FINAL ADJUSTMENTS
1. Screw the worm shaft preload adjusting
screw
(27) finger
tight until it contacts the worm shaft (5a).
2. Adjust the sector shaft adjusting screw (40) while rotating
the input shaft
90
degrees each direction until the input shaft
torque reaches 25-30 in. lbs. (2.825-3.39 Nm) (figure 11-102).
NOTE: Use
a 12-polnt
socket and
an
In. lb.
(Nm) torque wrench to rotate the Input
shaft.

Screw.
3.
Canter the steering gear oy aligning the sector shaft tim-
ing mark halfway between two trunnion cover bolts. The timing
mark will be perpendicular to the center line of the cylinder
bore.
4. Back out the sector shaft adjusting screw (40) one turn
and note the torque required to rotate the input shaft through
90
degrees each side of center.
5. Move the adjusting screw to provide a rise in torque of 2-4
in. lbs. (.226-.452 Nm) at this point within 45 degrees each side
of center.
6. After tightening the jam nut(53) to 40-45 ft lbs. (54.2-60.98
Nm), the torque now required to rotate the input s_haft must not
exceed 29 in. lbs. (3.28 Nm) at any point in the steering gear
travel.
7. Tighten the worm shaft preload adjusting screw (27) to
60-70 in. lbs. (6.78-7.91 Nm) torque, making sure the jam nut
(28) does not contact the end cover (26).
8. Tighten the jam nut to 70-80 ft lbs. (94.85-108.4 Nm).
making sure the adjusting screw does not move.
9. Confirm that the torque now required to rotate the input
shaft through complete travel does not exceed 50 in. lbs. (5.65
Nm).
NOTE: 55 In. lbs. (6.215 Nm) Is allowable
if
