BLOWER GEAR BOX
The engine cooling blowers are located in a separate com-
partment above the engine. The blower wheels are mounted on
a bevel gear box which is driven by means of a V-belt from the
engine crankshaft. See figure
6-17.
Outside air is drawn in
through the radiators and discharged by the blower into the
engine compartment.
Maintenance for the blower gear box 1s minimal: it contains
its own oil supply. and part of the daily maintenance procedures
should be to inspect the oil level. The correctlevel is when oil is
visible to the halfway point
in
the sight gauge. Add oil as
required in accordance with Section 10 (lubrication) of this
manual.
Make a periodic check of the sealed areas of the gear box to
ensure that there is no oil leakage. If any leakage 1s detected.
replace the defective seals or gaskets.

_ The blower wheels should be checked to ensure that they
are light on the shafts. If necessary tighten the retaining nut until
at least one shaft thread is visible through the nut.
The blower wheels are dynamically balanced and care
should be taken to prevent the blades from being bent. Any
accumulations of grease or dirt. which may cause the wheels to
. become unbalanced. should be removed.
CAUTION: Never leave loose objects such
as towels or rags in the blower compart-
ment as they may be sucked into the blower
wheels causing excessive vibration and
ultimate failure.
