The software uses ARP cache entries to translate 32-bit IP addresses into 48-bit hardware
addresses. Because most hosts support dynamic resolution, static ARP cache entries do not
need to be specified.
Example
The following example adds the IP address 198.133.219.232 and MAC address 00-00-0c-40-0f-bc to
the ARP table.
Console (config)# arp 198.133.219.232 0000.0c40.0fbc ethernet g8

arp timeout

The arp timeout global configuration command configures how long an entry remains in the ARP
cache. To restore the default value, use the no form of this command.
Syntax
arp timeout seconds
no arp timeout seconds
seconds—Time (in seconds) that an entry remains in the ARP cache.
(Range: 1 - 40000000)
Default Configuration
The default timeout is 60000 seconds.
Command Mode
Global Configuration mode
User Guidelines
It is recommended not to set the timeout value to less than 3600.
NOTE:
The ARP entry is deleted between the period of the "timeout value" and twice the "timeout value".
For example, if the timeout value is 20 seconds, the ARP value is deleted during the period of 20 to 40
seconds.
Example
The following example configures ARP timeout to 12000 seconds.
Console (config)# arp timeout 12000
