Command guidelines
The following topics discuss rules and guidelines that must be followed
when operating the HP 7042XA series of the instruments using HP-IB.
Commands are not case sensitive providing the same case is used throughout
the command. Also, commands names of >4 characters can use a specified
abbreviated form (a complete list of the commands in their abbreviated form
can be found in chapter 12 - Remote Commands). For example, to set an
output frequency, any of the following commands could be used:
•
SRC:OUTPUT:FREQUENCY 2.4GHZ
•
SRC:OUT:FREQ 2.4GHZ
•
src:output:frequency 2.4ghz
•
src:out:freq 2.4ghz
Language Considerations
The punctuation for the HP-IB commands conforms to the IEEE 488.2. It is
possible a given programming language may not accept some of the
punctuation used in the BASIC examples. It is therefore necessary to have an
understanding of the punctuation of the language being used for HP-IB
operation.
Using Spaces
When changing a field setting, a space must always precede the setting value
in the command (command <space> value), regardless of field type. For
example:
•
SRC:OUT:FREQ<space>2.4GHZ
•
DC:AMPL:INP:ATT<space>MAX
Using colons to separate commands
HP-IB command syntax is arranged by a control hierarchy that is
comparable to manual operation.
When the instrument is set using front panel controls, the main screen is
accessed, the desire function is selected, and then the appropriate setting is
made. The HP-IB commands are used the same way. For example, the
