Disable RAS
There are a number of problems that occur on TAPI clients using the Microsoft
Remote TAPI Service Provider that are related to the Remote Access Auto
Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection Manager services. The
Remote Access Auto Connection Manager and Remote Access Connection
Manager services are installed on the Windows 2000 and Windows XP operating
system. These services can be set to automatic start but are more usually set to
manual. It is recommended that they are set to disabled, as even in manual mode
the services may be started by another program.
RAS initialization-step by step:
•When RAS starts, it starts the TAPI service.
•The TAPI service initializes the remotesp.tsp service provider
•Remotesp.tsp asks the Telephony Server for line devices
•As RAS is configured to run under the "Local System account" the
Telephony Server denies the client machines "Local System" user name any
line devices
These problems manifest themselves to a number of ways including:
1. When a user logs on to a TAPI client PC she/he cannot see any of the lines
assigned to the user name.
2. The TAPI application on a client PC receives calls that are presented to a
telephone set that is not related to the client PC
There may be other issues caused by these two services that have not been
identified.
