Learn NVP

Chapter 7

Purpose

The Learn NVP tool allows you to measure the NVP (Nominal Velocity of
Propagation) of an unknown cable type provided that you have a known length.
Cable samples must be at least 50 feet (or 15 meters) long. Longer samples
produce more accurate NVP measurements.
NVP measurements must be made with an open circuit at the far end of the
cable under test.

Operation

From the Tools menu, press the Learn NVP button.
Attach a known length of cable to the WireScope 350 only. Do not connect the
far end of the cable to the DualRemote 350. Enter the known length of the
sample of cable.
Press the Calculate button to measure the NVP of the cable sample.

Results

The resulting NVP value represents the speed at which electrical signals
propagate along the sample cable, expressed as a percentage of the speed of light
in a vacuum.
